Jungpana Classic Spring Black Tea

This tea conjures memories of autumn as notes of maple wood and tuberose ease their way across the palate. Unlike most spring teas which have crisp and ‘biting’ notes, there is an even-ness to the flavors in this tea; a lusciousness that will greatly interest the followers of smooth Darjeeling autumnals.

the experience

Marked by subtle notes of maple wood and tuberose

The liquor starts out clean but turns floral quickly. A ‘touch of fire’ and a more discreet wood note become apparent in the middle, fading towards the end to reveal subtle notes of tree fruit.

Best enjoyed on its own.

Almost perfect, but not quite

Likes : Great Aroma, High Quality.

Best Served : Anytime.

I prefer the clonal Jungpana to this one, but this also is a wonderful tea, if a bit too vegetal for my taste. When the tea gets cooler, it quickly get an almost woody caracter that I do not like much, so do not make it in a too large cup, or drink fast :-)

It's light yet rich, with lovely fruity notes. A perfect late afternoon or evening tea. Just beautiful.

This tea is phenomenal, but a little disclaimer. The package instructions say 2 tsp @ 185-194 F for 5 minutes. If you do that the liquor will be bitter. A little word to the wise. This tea can be 2 tsp for 4:30 @ 185 max. Anything beyond that the tea will "bolt." Be careful, experiment by checking the tea every 20 seconds to find your preference. But most importantly do not overheat your water! Ok, that aside, the tea is among the best of Darjeeling's Spring Flushes, and for good reason. The aroma is fresh. The liquor is clean, well rounded, and balanced throughout. It is sweet with a great touch of pleasant astringency. Some might complain that this tea is too expensive. Well, if you had to hike the tea out of a garden on foot across sketchy rope bridges to fulfill a great demand for such teas, you'd charge a fairly high price too, wouldn't you? If you don't like the price, then perhaps try Mim as a great alternative.

Young and refreshing

Likes : Freshness, Great Aroma, High Quality.

Best Served : Anytime, Morning, Afternoon.

With a hint of floral notes, this tea is as pleasant and refreshing as you can expect from a young first flush tea. It has a slightly astringent finish which is what I was looking for, but if you are prefer a milder taste, I’d recommend brewing it for about 3 minutes.

Very Good, but a bit pricey

Likes : Freshness, Smooth Body, High Quality.

This tea is a very pleasant smooth darjeeling. It is mellow and full of body, not as light and refined as most great first flushes in this price range. The fragrance is toasty and nutty, but not as full of floral and muscatel notes as i would hope. Bottom line is i don't mind spending $40 on 100g of great tea, just this tea did not warrant the price-tag… as pleasant as it it.

Excellent afternoon tea

Likes : Great Aroma, High Quality.

Best Served : Afternoon.

I brew this tea stronger and for a shorter amount of time than recommended above, using multiple infusions. 1st infusion: 190 deg F (88 C), 4.6 g per 180 ml water, 3 min. 2nd infusion: 4 min. 3rd infusion: 5 min. The result is a light, aromatic tea with floral and fruit character. Soothing and delicious.

review for 2015, an excellent year

Jungpana is a premium tea producer. This year is exceptional. The price is high, but this is one of the best ff you will taste. It is classical with great aroma and flavor. Using enough tea to get the right flavor without bitterness can be tricky. This is a connoisseurs tea. Even the second infusion is good. Slight fruitiness with a touch of sweetness. Aroma is like a bouquet of flowers. There is a slight metallic aftertaste.
