Wah Classic Spring Black Tea

This is a super fine, leaf tea with Darjeeling-like flavors. What sets it apart is the soft texture and earthy quality of the liquor, attributed commonly to the teas from the Kangra region.

the experience

Marked by notes of firewood, nuts, and hints of yellow fruit.

The liquor starts out soft and clean but turns sweet and slightly bright towards the middle where it is marked by notes of sweet greens, citrus, and oak wood.

Ideal as a palate cleanser for rich food.

dry leaf

Heady note of toasted chickpea followed by musty and leather-like hints along with toasted cashew in the release.

Mix of well rolled, black-brown leaves with few pale olive green flakes.

Toasty, slightly burnt, and vegetal.

Bright green leaves.

A Delicate Black Tea

Likes : Freshness.

Best Served : Anytime.

A 10 gram sample packet of this tea was included in the order which I made earlier this month. I have since gone through the entire sample (a bit more than six cups given for me a cup is the more traditional 120ml with a tea/water brewing ratio of about 1:80). This is a tea which is light in body and a bit thin liquoring. It possesses notes of dried grass, nuts, and just a touch of malt. There are also some fleeting floral and fruit notes to be found as well. I would call it "delicate." I am glad to have been given an opportunity to sample it, and appreciate that a sample packet of it was included in my order.

This Wah Kangra is a very unique tea with a great flavor profile. It has a grassy, vegetal finish that is very comforting and warm. Another great black tea!

An afternoon pick-me-up with a difference.

The leaves do not look anything special when dry or after steeping, so I'll move on to the aroma and taste. The dry leaves of this tea have a very pronounced 'sweet hay' aroma that I found rather nice. Although there is a little 'hay' in the final cup, this isn't dominant. No hint of biterness when brewed as suggested. Quite a warm, rounded taste that is more delicate than I had expected. There is some natural sweetness and I'm getting alongside some 'toasted bread crumbs' too; a savoury edge that I can't quite describe - not malty (I am new to tea tasting!). No astringency to speak of, but does leave the mouth a little dry. This doesn't excite my taste buds like some teas, but I do like this as an afternoon 'refresher'.

Worth trying

Likes : Freshness, Unique Flavor Profile.

Dislikes : Weak.

Best Served : Morning.

Never having heard of this kind of tea I was keen to try it. It is most similar to a Darjeeling but has less flavour and aroma. It's very nice though although I wouldn't want to drink it every cup!

Pleasant surprise from Darjeeling-like flavour

Likes : Great Aroma, Unique Flavor Profile.

Best Served : Anytime.

Felt like a half-and-half mix of Darjeeling 1st flush and Laoshan green tea. Smells and tastes like darjeeling with flowery notes, grassy but not that sophisticated. At the same time it comes with the green tea taste profiles - brisk, grainy, umami, and crispy taste. Noted flavours: flowery (chrysanthemum), pine and pinenut, peppermint oil, lemongrass, nutmeg, lemon...

A different kind of Black

Likes : Freshness, Great Aroma, High Quality, Unique Flavor Profile.

Best Served : Anytime.

This is my second purchase from Teabox and I'm very satisfied with the quality of the tea I purchased. This black is unlike any other I have tried but in a very good way. I brewed it as recommended and easily got two good brews out of the leaf. This is a very tasty tea without the use of milk or sugar which I never use. Try this one if you are looking for a different taste experience.

interesting black tea

Dislikes : Bitter if Over-Steeped.

This is a black tea with a really mild, vegetal flavor, like that of green tea. This tea is rather delicate and the flavors are not as strong as you would expect from a black tea. overall very enjoyable though!

An acquired taste?

Likes : Unique Flavor Profile.

I purchased this tea out of curiosity, having never tried a Kangra tea before. It is unlike any other black tea I have tasted: very light and vegetal, but also with some initial sour, lemony/metallic notes. The dry leaves are tiny and needle-like. This tea strikes me as an acquired taste, and I agree with the reviewer who found it "more interesting than enjoyable".

A little better than the Wah Green

Best Served : Dessert Tea.

This reminds me of the Wah (Spring) Kangra Green. It has the same smokey aroma, without the chance of bitterness that the green has. In fact, the smokiness is almost a sweet roasted aroma, and it reminds me (somewhat) of a Japanese houjicha. I liked it fairly well. Goes well with sweets.

Very mild and delicate flavour. Loved it in Morning and as dessert tea as it is so mild and delicate as not to dominate and interfere with mood and other tastes. Loved the experience.

I had only a sample but I will add some Kangra teas in my purchase bag in the future. The aroma of this tea makes me think to a grass dried with flowers. A good alternative to Darjeeling.

Unexpected characteristics

Likes : Smooth Body.

Listed as a black tea, I was expecting a dark red/brown tea and was surprised to find a light amber color in my cup. The scent and taste are quite vegetal, but very pleasant.

A most refreshing cup.

This is a uniquely characterised tea from my experience. Despite being a spring flush it is not leafy. I can see why it is described as nutty. Not muscatel character with early steep. Improved even more with a longer steep - more muscatel and excellent flavour brought out. So hard to describe but a delicious and most refreshing cup. Good price too.

Grassy, Nutty

Likes : Freshness, Great Aroma, Smooth Body, High Quality, Unique Flavor Profile.

Best Served : Morning.

The dry leaves are large, uniform, and threadlike. As they steeped in boiling water, they had a really nice saline, vegetal smell. The liquor is a green olive sort of color. It is definitely a pungent, greener black tea with sharp cutting humid grassy edges. Balancing that out is an intense buttery flavor, which prevents any bitterness or 'coldness' from the grassy notes, keeping them very warm. The second steeping is interestingly better than the first. The tea picked up some very strong sweet roasted nutty notes, and a hint of smoke as it cooled off.
