Story

Founded in 1856 by pioneer planter J.E. Todd, Meleng Tea Estate is one of Assam’s oldest tea gardens. Set along the banks of the Meleng River near Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary in Jorhat, Upper Assam, the estate takes its name from the river that runs through its landscape.

Meleng has long been known for its diverse planting, bringing together traditional Assamica varieties and carefully cultivated clones. Its place in Assam’s tea history is especially marked by P-126, one of the estate’s notable clonal varieties, with a 20-hectare section of the original planting still thriving today.

Spread across 1,340 hectares, including 840 hectares under tea, Meleng continues to balance its deep roots with contemporary tea-making. More than a century and a half after its beginnings, the estate remains a distinctive part of Assam’s tea story - shaped by its landscape, heritage, and enduring commitment to quality.
