How To Steep

Step 1

Heat 150ml of water to 85–90°C (185-194°F).

Step 2

Measure 2 tsp (2.5 g) of tea into the teapot or infuser.

Step 3

Pour the hot water over the leaves and cover.

Step 4

Let it steep for 5 minutes.

Step 5

Strain and pour. These leaves give their best in one steep.

Serving

Enjoy it plain.

What does 'Muscatel' mean in tea?

'Muscatel' refers to a rare, naturally occurring flavor in some Darjeeling second flush teas—marked by fruity sweetness and a distinct aroma reminiscent of muscat grapes or Muscat wine.

It’s a prized characteristic, shaped by specific cultivars, terroir, and the timing of the summer harvest.

Who coined the term 'Muscatel'?

The term was coined in 1986 by iconic Darjeeling tea planter Mr. Arun Kumar Gomden.

He first identified this unique grape-like character in second flush Chinary teas and named it “Muscatel” after the Muscat grape, not musk. It marked a tea with soft, fruity depth and lingering finish unlike typical summer teas.

Which tea estate first produced Muscatel tea?

Castleton Tea Estate in Darjeeling’s Kurseong Valley was the first to craft a Muscatel tea in 1986.
A small 21 kg batch was auctioned at a record-breaking ₹1,460/kg—an unheard-of price at the time.

How does Muscatel tea taste?

Muscatel teas are full-bodied and aromatic with a signature grape-like fruitiness.

I am in love with teabox process and products

My first order was phenomenal. Going forward, I will only buy tea that has been picked within the week. From what I can tell, most of the delicate flavors are lost after a month. It's not worth buying anything old. I will just buy a new tea pouch each month and experience the seasons as they happen.

A complex black tea …

A complex black tea. The stone fruit is prominent, and it has soft flavor like a velvet oolong with more than a hint of mineral and a touch of sweet malt but with little of the bitterness of more robust black teas.

I love the flavor of this tea. Best part is if you leave it brewing for some time it still doesn't turn out to be too strong.

Nice for me in the afternoon

Steeped as to direction. Used a small teapot.
Golden orange brew with faint marigold petal aroma. Muscatel flavor with slight honey, peach and lemon notes, and a slight sweetness and faint bitter note, barely perceptible. It is definitely a good yummy tea not to forward and something I like in a early afternoon tea.

Wonderful darjeeling

I received this tea as a free sample. The dry tea has a woody-flowery scent. When steeped, it starts giving off sweet aromas of raisins, ripe stone fruit, underscored by floral notes. As the steeping proceeds completion, one gets a clear hit of vegetal note - cooked greens - underneath the fruity-flowery aromas.
The liquor is a deep peachy amber. On the palate, its surprisingly smooth with no astringency. The notes of stone fruit is very evident on the palate, ending with the vegetal notes. However, the 'muscatel' notes are hardly evident, especially when compared to the muscatel from Sungma.
Overall, an excellent tea. Only not 'muscatel' enough..

A Fruity Darjeeling

This tea smells wonderful. Definitely has a fruity flavor. Better without milk. I typically drink assams so probably not my favorite tea but very nice for what it is.

Great Smelling and Tasting Tea!

The aroma of this tea is captivating. I could not help but fall in love with just having this tea sitting nearby. It has a very distinct and pleasant perfume fragrance that is just as enjoyable as the tea's enthralling taste. It is a classic muscatel Darjeeling in that it is full of fruity, grapey notes. A sugary/honey flavor lingers well after the first and last sip, that make this tea an enjoyable experience from smell to finish.

I'd give this 4.5 stars

Compared back-to-back with the 2014 Castleton Musc. This tea is definitely one of the better ones from the '14 second flush. As has been the case with all of last years Darjeelings, the nose is a bit subdued, and the muscat scent doesn't really jump out of the cup, but it is very balanced with well integrated fruit and forrest flavours on the palate, smooth body, and a fairly long and slightly drying finish (which I really like in my Darjeelings).

A rare blend at once elegant and exotique. The aromatics are tantalizing and the cup fulfills the promise with a taste and mouth feel fully round and honeyed, true kin to the Muscat grape. ‘Tis a truly distinct pleasure yielding to its temptation!!!
