Mangalam Gold Summer Black

description

This tea is second to none other. Topped with delicious and robust flavors of caramel, dates and honey this tea is as indulgent as it gets.
What is notable about this tea is its velvety-smooth texture which feels absolutely wonderful on the palate. Finishing on a mellow, sweet note, the experience of this tea is highly gratifying. Thanks to its high caffeine content, it is just the perfect tea for a reviving sip in the mornings.

Understated Assam

Likes : Smooth Body, High Quality.

Best Served : Afternoon.

A very smooth and subtle summer Assam, one of the few that can be enjoyed without milk. Its slightly sweet and nicely malty but lacks the grunt and impact of some of the more robust summer Assams.

Plum, cherry, malt oh the malt. There is also a hint of burnt sugar and some dryness but it only adds to the allure. Mega bounciness. One of the few teas I can see myself adding some honey to. Brewed 7g in 220ml quick steeps.

Still a tasty treat

Likes : Great Aroma, Unique Flavor Profile.

I've received this tea before in my subscription box and luckily I enjoyed it the first time so I knew I'd like it this time. I love the taste and scent of the dates. It is a tea that I would buy for myself and would share with others. Reviewed as part of theTeabox subscription program.

Delicious tea akin to lapsang souchong

Likes : Freshness, Great Aroma, High Quality, Unique Flavor Profile.

Best Served : Morning, Afternoon.

This is a delicious, earthy tea with everything a lapsang souchong lover could want. The aroma listed on the packaging is nonsense -- it's earthy and smoky, almost like peat moss. The color is a lovely golden brown, bright (but not weak) and deep. The flavor is sensational -- not overly smoky the way a lapsang can be, but with hints of sweetness and malt, much like a good scotch. This is a really great tea worthy of repeated tastings.

Sweet Scent of Dates

Likes : Great Aroma, Unique Flavor Profile.

It definitely smells like dates when dry, a tasty and sweet aroma. It is very dark when steeped and the flavor is right up my alley – a sweet black tea. I would definitely recommend it if you prefer the sweeter, more dessert-like scents. Reviewed as part of theTeabox subscription program.

Always a Novelty

While easily available for many years now, it ever seems a novelty to purchase, prepare, and drink an orthodox single estate black tea from Assam. The minuscule amount of such fine pluckings in comparison to the amount of leaf destined for industrial-scale CTC-blenders, both domestic and international, and the ubiquitous packeteers upon which the modern Indian tea industry depends is truly mind-boggling when one looks at the numbers (sorry folks, the sale of our fine beloved Darjeelings doesn't even register half a percent in the overall picture). Yet, there are no small number of gardens, such as Mangalam, who have devoted some of their resources to the production of fine orthodox teas. This tippy wonder is one of them. Reminds one very much of drinking a fine single origin Brazilian pulped natural estate Arabica coffee, such as recent Fazenda Sertãozinho lots, while remembering that such excellent brews are grown right near trees whose fruit is destined to become Folgers crystals. Always a novelty.

Good Assam but

Likes : Freshness, Great Aroma, Unique Flavor Profile.

Best Served : Morning, Afternoon.

It's different from other Assam teas I've been drinking. I think it has unique flavor. Weak malty smell, but it has something like flowery flavor of Darjeeling SF. And little bitter taste is also had. It's a very good tea, but little strange. Because it's not a Assam tea I used to know.

Sweet assam

I usually drink Darjeeling and bought this tea for husband. He found it a little weak for his taste but did appreciate the freshness and flavour when drunk without milk. Definitely a sweet very slightly toasty flavour and no astringency. Despite being a lighter tea fan I found this tea intriguing and for me best drunk plain.

Great tea for the morning

Likes : Great Aroma, Smooth Body.

Best Served : Morning.

I enjoy drinking tea straight, even the more astringent ones. This, however, even though it is recommended sweetened or with lemon, is very smooth. It has an astringency in the aftertaste but it is short lived. The aroma is sweet and it is a very pleasant drink for the morning.

On first preparation it was really overwhelming. Very rich and special, yet not 'too special', does not challenge you, but rather comforts and pampers.

Caramel, Dates, and Honey

Likes : Freshness.

Dislikes : Strong.

Dry leaves have a light toasty smell and turn a medium earthy-brown when brewed. It has a rich, heady aroma of caramel, dates, and honey. I like the palate. It's smooth and astringent, but a little stronger than what I'm used to. Reviewed as part of theTeabox subscription program.

Reference-standard Assam

Since Mangalam is an estate whose teas I've been enjoying for decades I thought it would be a good choice for my first order from Teabox. The tea arrived less than a week from when I placed my order - astonishing considering the distance from India to Colorado! - and was packaged with the utmost care and precison. As for the freshness, I've only tasted such fresh under two other circumstances: when receiving FedExed samples back when I was a professional tea buyer, and when touring tea estates in Sri Lanka. As Teabox says, such freshness makes all the difference, and this lot of Mangalam has a room-filling malty pungency and vibrant, complex flavors. I'm grateful - and very impressed.

Great morning tea

This is a review for the Spring Mangalam Gold, which I don't see currently available. (At least, my packet does not say Summer flush and it came with a Spring sampler). This reminds me of Yunnan Gold black teas, except it is maltier and less like sweet baked bread. If I had to choose, I would take a quality Yunnan Dianhong, however, this Assam is excellent. Very smooth, wonderful aroma, and the slight astringency is thirst inducing. I really like it.

A superb, even an aristocratic, tea with a subtle yet bold melding of flavors. Fine wine comes to mind. Unique, fragrant, smooth, mellow, truly rich and nutty, beautifully balanced. It has a certain staying power … as in, “the melody lingers on.” A tip-top pleasure!

Sweet, easy to brew, with great color & aroma!

Likes : Freshness, Great Aroma, Smooth Body, High Quality.

Although expensive this is a non bitter tea, that can be brewed very easily to your specific strength. I brew mine in a tea ball, on medium heat, using a stainless steel pot, with 28 oz of spring water, not tap water, for two glass mugs, that hold 14oz each. When the water starts to steam, (vapors rising), I shut off the heat and brew for 3 minutes and 30 seconds using a microwave timer. Then I shut off the heat and dunk the tea ball until I get the beautiful color I want, that also gives me the strength that I want. I then pour the tea into the two glass mugs, and let them cool down, so as not to burn my mouth, but also when the tea is too hot, the flavor isn't there. Sometimes I open the tea ball and push down on the tea with a clean thumb!...but some may not like that! This tea can also be combined with other black teas as it is so sweet and lovely. I do this with some Assam from another company, that isn't as flavorful, and this makes a wonderful blend. This is only with Mangalam and Nepal Ilam teas that I have ever been able accomplish this blend, as they are both so sweet and flavorful. Some may say mild, but I prefer flavorful. as it is difficult to over brew these two wonderful teas. No bitterness.

Smooth but a bit lacking in complexity

Likes : Freshness, Smooth Body, High Quality.

Best Served : Morning, Afternoon.

This is a pretty refined whole-leaf assam. But for the money, I much preferred the Halmari ftgfop1 (which is about half the price). This one is very smooth, with a touch of honey and a medium maltiness. Overall, a bit too one dimensional, and not brisk enough for my morning cup.

This is a nice Assam for anyone from the beginner to the expert tea drinker. It is full of tippy leaves, which add to the complex character of this tea. The flavor is pleasantly astringent with smooth, malty hints throughout that make this a prized tea.

Convinced me I like Assam

Likes : Smooth Body, High Quality, Unique Flavor Profile.

Best Served : Morning.

I had basically sworn off Assam teas as unpredictable due to the potential for bitterness. TeaBox has changed my tune. I now view Assam as a go-to breakfast tea that has satisfying depth that takes milk well. Getting an Assam that brews strong without being easily bitter has been an issue in the past. This tea has convinced me I really do love Assam teas.

All the qualities of a good Assam are present. Rounded teaspoon and 5 minute steeping time needed or a little weak. I liked this tea quite a bit but I am with some of the other reviewers in that there are other teas I like just as much that don't cost this much.
