Story

Nestled in the tranquil Lebong Valley of Darjeeling, the Badamtam tea estate is a sanctuary of natural beauty and rich heritage. Established in 1858 by British planter Christine Barnes, the estate’s name is believed to originate from a Lepcha word meaning “bamboo water carrier,” symbolizing its deep cultural roots.

From its gently undulating hills, one is treated to sweeping views of the snow-capped Mt. Kanchenjunga, especially glorious at sunrise when the peaks glow with golden light. The Rangeet and Majhitar rivers carve through the estate’s lush landscape, nurturing a biodiverse haven filled with birds, wildflowers, and whispering groves.

No, it naturally contains caffeine—though in lower amounts than black or green teas. A typical cup may have 15–30 mg of caffeine, depending on leaf size, cultivar, and steeping time.

Can I cold-steep this tea?

Yes! Cold-steeping brings out its sweet, mellow notes beautifully. Use 3-4 tsp of tea per 240 ml of cold water. Let it steep in the fridge for 3–4 hours. Strain and enjoy chilled.

Alternatively, you can also brew it hot and pour over ice for a refreshing twist.

How should I steep this tea for the best experience?

Two years ago, I first encountered the Badamtam First Flush Black Tea. Its sophisticated aroma completely captivated me, and I found myself treasuring every gram throughout the year. Imagine my absolute delight when I discovered that Teabox released a limited edition of Badamtam White Tea this season.

Given its rarity, the price is as steep as the quantity is modest. Today, I carefully unsealed this precious tea for a private moment of indulgence. I prepared my favorite Noritake teapot and teacup, as I felt their timeless elegance would perfectly complement the subtle floral notes of the brew.

Truth be told, I was already half-intoxicated by the dizzying floral fragrance that filled the air during the steeping process. However, it was the first sip that truly compelled me to close my eyes in pure bliss.

Tasting Notes
• The Profile: A magnificent, feminine floral note reminiscent of peonies in full bloom.
• The Finish: Following the floral grandeur is a delicate, nutty undertone—much like the refined savoriness of a high-grade Woojeon green tea. It was a truly delightful surprise.

Having managed to secure only 25g, I am keenly aware that these moments of joy are limited. For my next session, I plan to invite my dearest tea companion to share in this exquisite experience.

It's hard to describe this tea! Yes it is very/too expensive yes it is produced 3-4 kilograms per year but the taste is unforgettable! The aroma and aftertaste remained for a long time after the first cup. Subsequent brews were not so much admired. Summary: Yes, tea is not for every day, but definitely worth a try!
