Caffeine in Teabox Chais: Every Chai We Make, by Caffeine Rating

Most Teabox chais carry a caffeine rating in our product data, and every chai we make with black tea is rated High. Here is how our current range is rated, what the ratings mean, and which of our Ayurvedic and herbal chais have caffeine and which have none. For the figures behind a cup of chai, start with Does chai have caffeine?

How does Teabox rate the caffeine in its chais?

Each Teabox tea page carries one of four caffeine ratings, Caffeine Free, Low, Medium or High, which compare our teas with one another rather than measure milligrams.Read more

The ratings are a comparison, not a lab result: Teabox has not lab-tested its teas for caffeine. Across our whole range, breakfast blends, chais and matcha are rated High; most single-estate Assam and Darjeeling blacks, our Moonlight whites and our oolong are Medium; our green teas and Silver Needle are Low; and our tisanes and herbal chais are Caffeine Free. The full scale is explained in How Teabox rates caffeine.

Readers have relied on these labels for a long time. One thanked us, on our 2016 caffeine article, “for labelling all the teas with High/Medium/Low,” because it let him pick something low or medium for the afternoon and save a high Assam for another day.

Why do chais sit at the top? Partly the leaf. Tea scientists at Tocklai found that smaller grades hold more caffeine than larger ones, and the small CTC granules in our chais give up their strength fast. Partly the method: chai is simmered with milk rather than steeped, and it is made to taste strong. How those choices move the caffeine is in What changes the caffeine in chai.

Which Teabox chais have the most caffeine?

Our black-tea chais, regional and Ayurvedic alike, are all rated High, with Teabox Kadak Chai the strongest in the cup; only our Instant Chai Latte Mix (Medium) and our herbal chais (Caffeine Free) sit lower.Read more

Do Teabox’s Ayurvedic chais have caffeine?

Most do: Rajasik, Rasayana, Ojas Ras and Ashoka Ras are all built on black tea, while Abhay Ras, Amrita and Soma are made only from herbs and flowers and have none.Read more

The product pages for Ojas Ras and Ashoka Ras put a cup at about 30 to 50 mg of caffeine, the same “around 30–50 mg of caffeine per cup” our 2025 launch copy gave for the Ayurvedic range. Ojas Ras is Assam CTC with spearmint, lemongrass, nutmeg and ginger; Ashoka Ras is CTC black tea with rose, licorice, ginger, cardamom and cinnamon.

When we launched the Ramayana Chai Collection in October 2026, we described Abhay Ras simply as “light, tart and caffeine-free,” next to its two black-tea siblings, Ojas Ras (“bold and invigorating”) and Ashoka Ras (“warm, floral and comforting”). The launch also said the collection is made with real herbs and spices, blended with fresh Assam tea.

The morning and evening pair are older. When we launched Rajasik and Rasayana in May 2021, we presented Rajasik as a chai to start the day and Rasayana as a cup for the end of the day. Both are made with black tea, and both are rated High, so the “Evening” in Rasayana’s name describes when it is meant to be drunk, not its caffeine.

How strong do our chais taste?

Strength in the cup and caffeine go together in chai: our boldest blends are built from the most robust CTC, and our tasters describe them by how they stand up to milk.Read more

Teabox Kadak Chai is the strongest of all. Its product page calls it “India’s most kadak cup of chai,” made from Assam and Dooars black tea, and it is rated High in both of our caffeine fields. Our steeping sheet brews it at 95 to 100°C (203 to 212°F) for 5 minutes, with milk.

When Avishek, of our procurement team, led a corporate chai tasting in 2022, he described Assam Masala Chai as a full-bodied cup that “feels strong on the palate,” with ginger first, then cinnamon and clove, and a finish of cardamom and black pepper: “An ideal early morning cup.” Kashmiri Saffron Rose, by contrast, he called “bright & brisk, medium-bodied.” Our product data agrees on timing: Assam Masala is marked for the morning and Kashmiri Saffron Rose for the evening, although both are black-tea chais rated High.

Medium-bodied is not the same as low in caffeine. A lighter-tasting chai still carries the caffeine of its black tea, so if you want less, change the cup and the brew, or choose a chai with no tea at all. Our caffeine-free options are in Decaf and caffeine-free chai.
